Short Inca Trail Difficulty
The short Inca trail 2 days difficulty is classified as an easy-moderate ★★★☆☆ trek with minimal altitude gain and is recommended for travellers in a good physical state. If you are fairly fit, take regular exercise and do not have weight problems or problems with your knees or ankles so, this Inca trail short trek is perfect for you.
Limited Spaces
Yes. To protect the historical trail, or trail network of Inca footpaths called Qhapaq Ñan, meaning “Royal Road,” and because of the high demand of the route, the limit of spaces for the Inca Trail 2 day trek is 250 per day. That is why you should reserve your space as soon as possible. Spaces can be filled up 2 to 3 months in advance. Spaces fill more quickly in the high tourist season, from May to September.

Acclimatization
Since the short Inca Trail trek is carried out at a much lower altitude than the classic 4-day Inca Trail; you do not need to worry about acclimatization as much, although many people still find themselves short of breath when arriving at Wiñay Wayna so this trek should certainly not be considered an easy option. We recommend 1-day in Cusco before embarking on the Sacred Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Hotel/Accommodation
This 2-day Inca Trail tour or 2-day hike to Machu Picchu includes one night accommodation in a nice and comfortable 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes (based on double occupancy and triple occupancy in case of families or friends) with breakfast included and private bathroom, hot shower, Wi-Fi, breakfast, as well as luggage storage while you visit Machu Picchu. You can also book the tour without hotel, if you prefer to book it on your own. Just let us know.

Cusco – Ollantaytambo – KM 104 – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
Start in Cusco around 4:00 am and drive to Ollantaytambo to take the first train to the Short Inca Trail – Km 104. Hike along the original Inca Trail through gorgeous landscapes surrounded by gigantic mountains and lush vegetation for about 7 hours to Machu Picchu.
Explore fascinating Inca archaeological sites like Chachabamba, astounding Wiñay Wayna, which means “Eternal Youth” and and learn all about the ancient culture of the Incas from our expert local guide, and then you’ll have time to connect with nature and Mother Earth in the most stunning landscape.
After hiking about 4 hours, enjoy your packed lunch in the middle of the rolling hills before walking up to the Inti Punku or “The Sun Gate” and get your first impressive view of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
The view from the Sun Gate, or “Inti Punku” in Quechua, it’s a dreamy landscape without a doubt, so make sure you soak it up before you hike down toward the iconic Machu Picchu Citadel, taking in magnificent panoramic views along the way, arrive in the afternoon and enjoy Machu Picchu almost empty.

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
On the last day, you will wake up early. have breakfast at the hotel, and take the first buses to Machu Picchu for 25 minutes and then see the stunning sunrise at Machu Picchu surrounded by gigantic mountains and lush subtropical vegetation – an awesomely magical experience!
Then, explore the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu – one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World and Latin America’s top touristic destination, with your private local guide and learn its history, secrets, and the importance of the fortress before coming back to Aguas Calientes.
After enjoying a 2.5-hour guided tour at remarkable temples and plazas in this magical and sacred wonder of Machu Picchu —Peru’s top tourist destination. Take more time by yourself to see as much as possible and venture on an additional hike to Huayna Picchu Mountain.
Make the most of your time here before going down to have lunch in the town of Aguas Calientes, and in the afternoon board the train to return to Ollantaytambo and then our private transportation will take you back to your hotel in Cusco. Arrive in Cusco around 07:00 pm.

Full Itinerary of the Short Inca Trail Tour
Pre-departure briefing: We’ll meet you at your hotel in Cusco for an orientation the night before your 2-day Inca Trail tour or 2 day hike to Machu Picchu to go over the itinerary and you can take this opportunity to ask final questions and make any final preparations. The meeting will be at 5:30 pm the evening before the trip begins. In case you can´t at this time “please let us know” to coordinate another time.
DAY 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Sun Gate/ Inti Punku – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
To begin your adventure of 2-day Short Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco around 4:00 am. You’ll then drive for around one and a half hours to the Ollantaytambo train station. If your hotel is located in the Sacred Valley or Ollantaytambo, the pick-up could be around 5.00 am or 5:30 am.
For all travelers hiking the Short Inca Trail, we recommend staying the day before somewhere closer to the train station in Ollantaytambo; you can save 1.5 hours of travel from Cusco. If you participate in a tour like Sacred Valley the day before, you can request the drop-off in Ollantaytambo and spend the night in a hotel.
Peru Spirit Adventure will pick you up from any location in Sacred Valley, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo or Cusco. The pickup times will be confirmed at your briefing, as they might fluctuate based on where you are staying.
After driving in a conformable private transportation from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, you’ll have a few minutes to make any last-minute purchases and then before boarding the Expedition Class Train at 6:10 am, we will provide your box lunch, which you carry in your daypack to enjoy later on.
You will then enjoy a 1 hour and 20 minute leisurely train ride along the Urubamba River and through the Peruvian Andes, with phenomenal views of snow-capped mountains to the lush jungle, brimming with orchids and ferns until the beginning of the 2-day Short Inca Trail hike, called KM 104 – Chachabamba, located in the cloud forest at 2,100m/6,927ft!
Once we disembark after a train journey, we will cross the Urubamba River over a picturesque footbridge and head straight to the checkpoint at Chachabamba to start your Short Inca trail Trek.
Please note that you will need the original passport to pass the checkpoint. Just make sure to carry your passport and (we take care of all the necessary paperwork at the time of booking and all these documents will be carried by your tour guide).
Once you and your tour guide pass through an Inca Trail checkpoint, your tour guide will tell you a brief orientation about the details of the trail, and have time to prepare for the hike, use the restrooms, apply Sunscreen, bug spray/repellent, and warm up.
Our first stop on the trek will be at the beautiful Inca site of Chachabamba, that consists in having temples, the main patio, sacred rock, etc. In addition, you will be immersed in the stunning landscape as you’re surrounded by lush vegetation and towering mountains watching over you.
After learning the history of the archaeological site of Chachabamba from your guide and exploring the beautiful Inca site, we continue the hike along an ancient Inca Trail abandoned in the 16th century, with stops at several outlooks to enjoy an expansive view of the Urubamba River.
Afterwards, we will continue walking the first section of the Short Inca Trail is a gradual uphill hike for 4 hours with some flat parts, spectacular scenery, waterfalls, and lovely views of the Sacred Valley abound as we rise up the mountainside, until we arrive at Wiñay Wayna (2,650m / 8,695ft), which means ‘forever young or the place that never gets old;’ this is one of the most beautiful Inca sites on the Classic Inca Trail.
At the archeological site of Wiñay Wayna, we will take some time to explore this stunning Incan complex and learn the fascinating history of this amazing Inca ruins and discover a ritual water fountain, a temple dedicated to the forces of nature and the beautiful agricultural platforms while enjoying spectacular views of the Andes.
Also, take some time to relax, unwind in peace, and connect to Mother Nature through birdsong and soft whisper of the wind. A little further on, we’ll spot the campsite where those doing the Classic Inca Trail spend the night. Here, you’ll have time to enjoy the tasty box lunch we’ve prepared for you and chill out.
Once fed, we’ll continue our gentle hike for about for about 1 hour and 20 minutes to the Sun Gate / Inti Punku (2,700m / 8,858ft) to catch your first glimpse of the Lost City of the Incas – a truly unforgettable sight; from where you get your first outstanding view of Machu Picchu, with all its incredible architecture, and beautiful mountains surrounding the area.
We will arrive at Sun Gate around 3 pm when the crowds from Machu Picchu have left; allowing you time to gaze on Machu Picchu and get the perfect picture. After taking photos and exploring the area, it’s another one-hour downhill walk from the Sun Gate to the ancient Inca citadel, with breathtaking views, and you’ll also able to watch the magical golden light of the sun setting on the immerse stone walls for some tranquility.
Once we arrive at Machu Picchu – Wonder of the World, we will take our time to take more pictures from the viewing platforms above the site, as the afternoon is usually less crowded. After taking photos, we’ll then take the bus down to Aguas Calientes town and head to your hotel, have dinner in a local restaurant, and spend the night in a 3-star hotel.
Dinner is served in top-rated restaurants in the town, following dinner, we recommend going to bed early to make the most of the next day.

DAY 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
After a well-deserved night’s rest, it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. Today, you’ll be wandering the mysterious streets of the majestic historical sanctuary of Machu Picchu, one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World and an unmatched sample of the Inca Culture in America!
On our final day of the Short Inca Trail tour, we will get up very early to have breakfast at your hotel and then take a short walk from your hotel to catch a bus that’ll take us on a 25-minute drive to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Inca citadel. We’ll enter juts before the sun comes up and paints the fortress with a gorgeous golden hue.
After passing the Machu Picchu checkpoint, you’ll walk for a few minutes to watch the spectacular sunrise over Machu Picchu on a clear day. This is truly an unforgettable sight. After soaking it all in and taking your first few photographs. Onward, your tour guide will take you on a 2-hour private guided tour of the amazing Inca site by the CIRCUIT #3.
You’ll be visiting the most important parts of Machu Picchu Citadel, with a private exclusive Peru Spirit Adventure’s tour guide, including the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Condor, Temple of the Three Windows, Sun Dial, Quarry, the Houses of the Inca and learn the history of Machu Picchu from your local expert.
Once the tour is up, before leaving you in Machu Picchu to explore, or climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Montaña (tickets must be booked as far in advance as possible). Your tour guide will explain how to take the bus from Machu Picchu back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included).
Those who have tickets to Huayna Picchu will have time to climb the mountain, which takes approximately an hour and a half round-trip, and you’ll need up to 3 hours for Machu Picchu Mountain and will experience more stunning views of the whole Inca city.
When you’re ready to leave, it’ll be time to head back down to Aguas Calientes. You will have time to explore the town, choose the restaurant of your preference, and buy souvenirs in the local market.
Optional: After the Machu Picchu tour, you can hike down from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes using the Hiram Bingham original trail; on the way, you can visit the Machu Picchu museum, butterfly station and enjoy the fantastic views.
Later in the afternoon, you will board the Expedition Class Train at 14:55 pm or 15:20 pm (subject to availability) for return trip to Ollantaytambo, and then a private transport will be there to pick you up and take you back to your hotel. The arrival time to Cusco is around 07:00 pm.

Permits & Entrance Tickets: As soon as we receive your complete information and the deposit that secures your reservation, we’ll purchase all the necessary permits (subject to availability). These permits are issued for a specific date and will be in your name. They cannot be changed once confirmed. Change of passport number is only allowed for renewal reasons. In that case, you must bring both your old and new passport. The permit includes an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu Archaeological Site.
Transportation: You’ll be picked up directly from your hotel in Cusco around 4 am in the morning and will travel by private transportation to Ollantaytambo Train Station to board the Expedition Class Train at 6:10 am and brought to KM 104 (Starting point of the trek). The train back from Machu Picchu town “Aguas Calientes” to Ollantaytambo will be on the Expedition Class Train at 14:55 pm or 15:20 pm (subject to availability). You also have the option to upgrade to the Vistadome train for $75 per person for the same time, 14:55 pm or 15:20 pm. Once you arrive at the train station, we’ll pick you up and drive to Cusco in our private van, arriving to your hotel in Cusco at 19:00 pm – 19:30 pm. Additionally, your Short Inca Trail 2 days trek includes bus ticket from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes on day 1, and round trip bus ticket from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu ruins on day 2.

Medical Kit & Oxygen bottle: Your trekking guide will carry a first-aid kit, including an emergency oxygen bottle to face basic emergencies. If something does happen, which is rare.

- Travel interruption & travel medical/evacuation insurance (required): Recommended for those who live at sea-level, landing in Cusco will take an adjustment period. Most people need one or two days to adjust. In case you have a hard time adjusting to the altitude, it is suggested to have protection for missed tours.
- Entrance ticket to Huayna Picchu: Huayna Picchu is the mountain that stands next to Machu Picchu. It’s a 45-minute hike to the top of Huayna Picchu. The views of Machu Picchu from the top are incredible. However, if you’re afraid of heights you need to be warned that coming back down the path is quite steep. If you decide to take this hike then you would it after your tour of Machu Picchu. The cost is $75 per person and arrangements need to be made at least one or two months in advance due to popularity. Huayna Picchu mountain has a 400 permit per day limit which is divided into two groups of 200-person, the first group between 7:00 am to 8:00 am, and the second group between 10:00 am to 11:30 am.
- Gratuities: Tipping is usual on any excursion to Machu Picchu. Although we pay good salaries to our entire team, something extra is always welcome, especially considering their hard work. Please feel free to tip or not as you wish, and should be based completely on your satisfaction.
- Flights: Flights to Cusco are a bit complicated because delays often occur and it is not uncommon for flights to be canceled. LATAM Peru the most reliable of airlines, AVIANCA, and Peruvian Airlines are acceptable companies.
- Additional costs or delays beyond our control: Landslides, bad weather conditions, itinerary modifications due to a safety concern, illness, pandemia, government policy change, political instability, strikes, act of God, etc.
Packing List for the Short Inca Trail 2 days tour
During the Short Inca Trail, remember there will be no porters to help you carry your belongings, so you should try and pack as lightly as possible. A light packpack is a key to feeling great and enjoy this emazing hike. The box lunch also will be carried by each tourist.
We recommend you bring a good quality daypack that is light and comfortable. It is important to note that due to local regulations, your backpack should not exceed 25L. All larger packs can not be taken into Machu Picchu; you must store them outside the gates.
If you require a personal porter, this can be requested when booking for an extra charge. However, we do not recommend it as we can even send some of your belonging directly to the hotel by train.
What do you need to take for the Short Inca Trail 2 days?
- Original passport (a copy will not be accepted), passports must be valid for 6 months beyond the date the traveler will enter Peru (if you have acquired a new one after you made your booking, bring both).
- Valid Student Card (if you booked as a student), the original student card must be issued by the university up to the age of 25, containing the following: university information, personal information of the student, photo of the student, and a valid date no greater than December 31 of the current year.
- Hiking boots for the Short Inca trail, you’ll need to ensure comfortable shoes/flip-flops or Sturdy Hiking boots.
- A good quality daypack, lightweight and comfortable, with enough room to carry water, snacks, and a few other essentials (if not waterproof bring waterproof backpack cover or a poncho that will cover your backpack)
- Water storage for at least 2 liters; either a camel bag or water bottle(s); 1-liter water bottles work very well, 2 of them to have the 2 liters recommended. Plastic disposable bottles are prohibited in Machu Picchu; make sure you have reusable containers.
- 2 t-shirts (wicking t-shirts work best) and one pair of hiking pants/trousers
- A change of clothes for walking around Machu Picchu

The “short Inca Trail trek or Inca Trail 2 Days Hike to Machu Picchu” can leave any day of the week as long as permits are available, from March through January. We don’t run this trek in February because of the rainy season & maintenance.
Prices per person in USD, based on the group size, the larger the group the lower the price per person.

There is a surcharge for a single room. We can also book the tour without any hotels, if you prefer to book them on your own.

- If you’d like to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, let us know at the time of booking as it requires a separate permit.
- Huayna Picchu is optional treks within Machu Picchu Citadel which do not include a guide. The climb is usually done on your own after your tour of Machu Picchu Citadel. If you would like the extra hike to be guided, please request in advance. There is an extra cost for this extra guided tour.
