By embarking on our 1-day Inca Trail trek, experience the train journey through the Andean foothills following the Urubamba River to the starting point of the trek, called km 104. Then, hike the short Inca Trail and visit Machu Picchu Citadel all in one day! The trail goes through the National Park, archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, and enters through the Sun Gate with unforgettable views of the imponent Machu Picchu. Upon arriving at Machu Picchu, get a private guided tour, visiting all the hidden corners of the Inca monument.

Need to Know For “The 1-Day Inca Trail Tour”

For the 1-day Inca Trail trek, all potential trekkers need to understand that you are doing the same trail as the 2 Day Inca Trail, just more quickly. The only different is that if you are booking the 1-day version, you tour Machu Picchu that same day and return to Cusco that night.

Trekkers need to be in moderate to excellent physical condition to be able to do this trek and arrive at Machu Picchu Citadel in time. If you think the “1-Day Trek to Machu Picchu” may be too strenuous and quick, you may book the 2-day Inca Trail which arrives to Machu Picchu in one day but at a slower pace later in the day.

The appeal of the Inca Trail tour – short version, is the stunning cultural show of Inca archaeological sites such as Wiñay Wayna, a beautiful Inca citadel and the most important construction in the traditional Inca trail, exotic mountain views, primitive lush vegetation, streams, waterfalls, extraordinary ecological varieties, and the first sights of Machu Picchu from the gateway of the sun.

The Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 1 Day

Hike the best section of the famous Inca Trail by embarking on an adventure of 1-day Inca Trail trek from Km 104 to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate & explore Machu Picchu right away!

  • At 4:00 AM our tour guide will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco or at 5:30 AM in Ollantaytambo, if you wish to start from there.
  • We’ll transfer you in private transport to the train station in Ollantaytambo to board the train at 6:00 AM
  • Departing on the Expedition train, enjoy the spectacular views and natural scenery along the sacred Urubamba River to the head of the Inca Trail, called Km 104.
  • At 7:30 – 8:00 AM, you’ll pass the Inca Trail checkpoint and then you and your guide will start hiking up on Inca Trail following the footsteps of the Incas till Inti Punku “Sun Gate” to get the first glimpse of Machu Picchu. The exact time depends on the walking pace
  • You will see expansive mountain views, lush subtropical vegetation, extraordinary ecological varieties, and explore amazing Inca cities along the Inca Trail, especially the beautiful archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna
  • You will have time to enjoy box lunch after exploring the Wiñay Wayna Archaeological Site, usually around noon.
  • An hour or so after lunch you will arrive at Inti Punku, best known as Sun Gate where you will get your first view of Machu Picchu!
  • By 14:00 you will start exploring the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Your guide will explain all the history of this amazing and mysterious Incan city.
  • By late afternoon, enjoy the sunset and take the iconic photo of Machu Picchu when it is empty of tourists before heading out to catch a bus.
  • At 17:00 take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, with time for a quick dinner in a restaurant, or to buy a take out dinner to eat on the train. (Dinner is not included).
  • The Expedition Train departs at 6:20 pm take the train back to Cusco then we will drive you back to your hotel in Cusco in our private van.

Full Itinerary of the 1-Day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu

Pre-trek briefing: Our tour guide will meet you at your hotel lobby in Cusco the night before your 1-day Inca Trail trek to go over the itinerary and you’ll be able to take this opportunity to ask final questions and make any final preparations. The meeting will be at 5:00 pm the evening before the Inca trail tour begins. In case you can´t at this time “please let us know” to coordinate another time.

Day 01: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Cusco

We will begin the 1-day Inca trail tour by picking you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 am and transfer you on our private transport to the Ollantaytambo Train Station (If you prefer to start in Ollantaytambo, we will pick you up at your hotel at 5:30 am).

Before boarding the Expedition Class Train at 6:10 am in Ollantaytambo, we will provide your box lunch, which you carry in your daypack. Then, you and your tour guide will take the train for 1 hour 30 minutes to the beginning of the Inca Trail, called km 104 (2,000 m / 6560 ft. above sea leave).

After passing the Inca Trail checkpoint, your tour guide will take you to visit the first archaeological center, called Chachabamba. This site was one of the last shelters used by the Incas pilgrims before they reached Machu Picchu. The Chachabamba Inca site features several fascinating buildings, and your guide will be delighted to share the history with you.

Afterward, your Inca Trail trek starts with steady ascent for around 3 hours, climbing the original Inca stone step, with several outlooks points where you will stop to have an expansive view of the Urubamba River. Along the way, your guide will help you to identify the different types of flora and fauna in this unique area. After passing a spectacular waterfall, you will arrive at Wiñay Wayna Archaeological Site, located at (2,650 m / 8,694 ft above sea level). Most hikers stop here to be amazed by its exquisite architecture.

At the astonishing archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, you’ll see many water sources for rituals, Sacred places dedicated to the natural deities like the Rainbow Temple, and beautiful agricultural platforms overlooking the Urubamba River. Wiñay Wayna (Quechua for “forever young”) is the perfect place to learn a little more about the impressive history of the Incas, take time to relax, be silent, and connect with the Mother Earth through birdsong or the wind’s refreshing touches.

After exploring the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, you will walk for 5 minutes to the lunch spot and have time to eat your delicious box lunch provided by our company, admiring the surrounding tropical flowers, then relax and recharge your energies. You will also see the campsites where people doing the classic Inca Trail spend the night before reaching Machu Picchu.

After lunch, you will have a mostly flat walk to Inti Punku, best known as the Sun Gate, from where you will have your first view of the impressive architecture of this majestic Inca City. Although the hour-long walk is a gentle up and down, it ends with a set of steep stairs carved directly into the bedrock by the Incas. Once you reach the stairs you will know you are almost at Inti Punku.

The Sun Gate, also called Inti Punku in Quechua, is located at (2,720 meters/2,924 feet above sea level) provides the first views of the magnificent Machu Picchu, in all its brilliance and majestic monumentality, it is difficult to put into words the impact of seeing this ancient, sacred and world-famous Site.

After taking some time to enjoy the views and take those important photos, you will walk downhill following the footsteps of the Incas on the Inca Trail for about an hour toward Machu Picchu ruins. Once there, take some time to enjoy the views, take memorable pictures and fill your spirit with the energy of this place. You will then have a 1-hour guided tour through this incredible ancient city and visit temples, terraces, palaces, priest’s houses, the intihuatana, the industrial sector, and the farming fields.

Once we end this magical experience in one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, we will walk down to the main entrance of Machu Picchu from where we will take the bus to Aguas Calientes, also called Machu Picchu Pueblo. In the afternoon, you will take the Expedition train back at 6:20 pm to the train station in Ollantaytambo and private transportation back to Cusco and we will drop you off at your hotel around 10:00 pm. If you upgrade to the Vistadome, you will depart Aguas Calientes at 6:10 pm. End of the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 1 Day.

Because of this, it is imperative to pack as light as possible to enjoy this amazing trek. A light backpack is a key to feeling great. The box lunch also will be carried by each tourist.

Prices are per person in USD, based on group size. We operate our ONE DAY INCA TRAIL HIKE TO MACHU PICCHU exclusively in a private tour service, except by special request. Hiking the Inca Trail as a private group allows us to offer you a highly personalized experience, with more one-on-one time with your guide and a more tailored, off-the-beaten-path experience on the trail. We do not have fixed-date group departures.
