The Lares trek Machu Picchu is an excellent trail for those who want to get off the “beaten track” as it treks through authentic Andean communities which have remained unchanged over 100s of years. On Lares trek 3 days to Machu Picchu combines amazing mountain scenery and glacier lagoons through the rich pastoral region of the snowcapped mountain range of Urubamba, crossing with wonderful views of snowy peaks. Likewise, we´ll see llamas and alpacas along the way.

Our adventure of Lares trek Machu Picchu is a shorter alternative to the Inca Trail in a remote area. Starting from Cusco through Sacred Valley of the Incas, getting until (4,650 m/ 15,258ft.) before finishing at Aguas Calientes town (Machu Picchu Pueblo) to visit Machu Picchu the next day. The trail of Lares trek Machu Picchu just offer a stunningly and unique, hike despite the high altitude. Day 1: Cusco – Lares village – Huacawasi community

Very early in the morning, we pick you up from your hotel 4:30 am, on our private vehicle and travel through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Calca. Where we will stop using a bathroom and visit farmer´s market. We will then continue driving towards the Amparaes Pass at over (4.580 m / 15.026 ft.) enjoying the stunning scenery of spectacular view of snowcapped mountain range, rural communities with plenty of alpacas and llamas, before descending to Lares village for breakfast and visit natural hot spring ( the temperature is between 28° and 38°).

Also, here we will meet our arrieros (horsemen) and start our Lares Valley Hike to Machu Picchu. After relaxing in the natural hot spring, we start hiking uphill for 2 hours to reach the lunch spot, known Chanca Chaca. Following lunch, we continue gently climb seeing the llamas and alpacas towards the campsite, Called Huacahuasi (3.800 meters). While hiking, we will see hillside rural communities. Finally, we arrive at the first campsite where we interact with locals. Likewise, we will enjoy our afternoon tea, followed by the dinner.

Day 2: Huacawasi community – Condor Pass – Yanahuara – Aguas Calient

This day is a challenging day, but the most rewarding day as well at the end. The wake you up will be very early at 5:30 am, which allows us the best views of our incredible Andean mountain environment. After our breakfast, we will hike for 3 hours uphill to the Condor Pass (4,650 meters 15,255ft.), this highest point offers a gratifying view of the valleys and Lake Condor Cocha below. We also enjoyed observing species of native birds, including Andean geese (Cara Cara), ducks and plovers. From the Condor Pass, we will descend to our lunch place.

After lunch, we will hike downhill to a nearby lake Mantanay (3,850 m/12,631 ft.), enjoying the beautiful scenery and native wildlife around (such as the Queuñas tree). This day will be a great day to take plenty of pictures. Then we arrive at Yanahuara (2,780 m/9,120 ft.) an inviting warm village with a comfortable climate, located near Urubamba Valley (the Sacred Valley of the Incas). Our vehicle will meet us here to take us to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, the place where we board our train service to Aguas Calientes village, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo (1 hour and 45 minutes train ride).

Day 3: Machu Picchu – Cusco

After an early breakfast at the hotel in Aguas Calientes, we will board the first tourist bus to the Machu Picchu main entrance for 30 minutes. You will have an early-morning, 2-hours guided tour of this spectacular and mystical site. This guided tour includes walking through the different sections of the city, such as the urban sector, the agriculture sector, and the religions zone. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the city by yourself, according to the time set by the tour guide.

Additionally, this free time can be used to climb the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountains to have the best panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. However, if you would like to do this, please book this in advance as there are additional tickets that need to be purchased. Climbing to the top of Huayna Picchu Mountain will take approximately 2 hours (roundtrip) and Machu Picchu Mountain 2.5 hours. At the designated time, you will take a bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you will have lunch and receive your train ticket(s) back to Ollantaytambo. From Ollantaytambo, we will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco using our private transport.

    • Any unexpected situations occurred during the trip and which are beyond our control, including changes in scheduling trains or flights, delays, strikes, cancellations, missed connections, etc. it should be covered by the passenger as an all.
    • If you for physical reasons of health cannot continue the trekking or the tour, and will need emergency evacuation then all charges incurred such as transportation, ambulance, doctors, medication, hospitalization, hotel, etc. will be at passenger’s expense.

What to bring

  • Sleeping bag (the recommendation is a rating of at least minus 10°c.)
  • Sleeping bag liner.
  • Hiking boots (waterproof). Sneakers are acceptable but expect to get wet
  • Long-sleeved shirts to prevent sunburn.
  • Trekking poles with rubber covers. Without rubber covers, they will be of limited use.
  • Comfortable hiking clothes, including warm clothes for the nighttime.
  • Toilet paper, and face tissue paper.
  • Headlamp.
  • Water bottle or canteen.
  • American dollars and Peruvian soles in cash.
  • Sun hat, cap, and warm hat and gloves for the nighttime.
  • Hiking trousers.
  • Hiking socks.
  • Sunblock and sunglasses.
  • Deep or mosquito repellent.
  • Day Pack: We provide a duffle bag, to put in some personal belonging that will no use during the day, and it will be carried by pack horses, and you will need a small daypack for carrying your water, snacks, camera, rain gear, and layers, sunscreen and bug spray, meds every day. Note: Maximum allowed in Machu Picchu is 25 liters, but the smaller the better.
  • Rain gear: (you need to have a rain gear. From April- Oct is dry season and from Nov-Mar is the wet season. Just keep in mind that it can rain any time of the year in the cloud forest and in the Peruvian Andes the weather is very changeable and unpredictable, it’s also good to have rain pants, as well, as a poncho will not suffice)
  • Personal first-aid kit: We recommend you bring anti-inflammatory tablets (ibuprofen), aspirin for headaches or muscle pain and blister kit.). Also, some recommendations meds of the doctor for parasites and stomach bacterial infections (tablets like Ciprofloxacin for bacteria and Metronidazole, Tinidazole) and for high altitude (altitude sickness) Diamox and Ciprofloxacin.
