Day 1: Cusco – Llama/Alpaca Farm – Pisac Inca Site – Pisac Market – Urubamba – Ollantaytambo – Train Journey to Aguas Calientes & Overnight at comfortable Hotel

To begin the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu Tour 2 Days by the Cusco-Pisac highway, our professional guide who speaks English will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at either 7:00 am or 8:00 am, depending on what train you will take to Aguas Calientes, after touring the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After being collected from your hotel, you and your tour guide will drive in our comfortable transportation toward the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas. Along the way, you will visit the Awanacancha Alpaca farm. Here, you will see the traditional animals of the Incas, such as llamas and alpacas; and also, vicuñas and guanacos, which are the wild species. Your guide will give you background information, show you a potato display and a textile center, showing how the wools are woven and colored. Good quality alpaca wool will be for sale.

Next, we will head to El Mirador del Valle Sagrado, the Sacred Valley Lookout Point, for witnessing the amazing views and take photos. We will then drive to the archaeological site of Pisac, built on top of a mountain that towers over the small town of Pisac; the views of the countryside are spectacular and the ruins and their makers are remarkable. The ruins of Pisac are also among the most intact ancient sites in Peru, and a perfect example of ingenious Inca architecture, and one of the most important Inca jewels within the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After visiting the magnificent Inca remains of Pisac. We descent to the traditional village of Pisac for the opportunity to explore the charming local market in Cusco region, where women come down from the Andean villages to sell their textiles and vegetables and also, where Peruvian handicrafts are on sale. It is here that many fine Andean garments and textiles are available.

Leaving the famous Pisac market, we will drive towards Urubamba for about 45 minutes, along the flat road that winds through the bottom of the Sacred Valley of the Incas with great views of the surrounding mountains. Once we reach Urubamba town, here we will stop for lunch (not included). You will have an amazing selection of fresh dishes, served buffet-style. After lunch, we will continue on to Ollantaytambo which is the best-preserved Inca ruins of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where the second heaviest Inca monoliths are to be found.

When we arrive at Ollantaytambo, we will visit the impressive archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo which consists of a series of superimposed terraces of carved stones accessed by long staircases to the Temple of the 10 Niches, Temple of the Sun and Moon and offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside, the town of Ollantaytambo itself and the Incan storehouses or ‘Qollqa’ built on the Pincuylluna mountain opposite the ruins. Besides, the design of Ollantaytambo village and the majority of its foundations date from the Inca era when it was a strategic military, religious, and agricultural center.

After visiting the ruins of Ollantaytambo, you will have free time to explore the town of Ollantaytambo, the last living Inca city, where you will see water channels, beautiful stone wall houses, which are still functioning as the home of the local families, and walk on its original Incan streets, which still remains as intact as in the Incan times. Additionally, this free time can be used to climb the Pinkuylluna mountain to explore the Incan granaries from XV century and have the best panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

Afterwards, enjoy dinner (not included) at one of the restaurants before boarding the Expedition (Tourist train) at 19:04 pm. The train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, takes approximately two hours. On arrival to Aguas Calientes, your tour guide will meet you just outside the train station, and lead you to your hotel. Your tour guide will tell you the schedule for the Machu Picchu tour for the next day.

Dear Customer; On this tour, you are able to ride the Vistadome (Superior train) from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. The Vistadome train departs from the Ollantaytambo train station at 15:36 pm. Huayna Picchu is the mountain that stands next to Machu Picchu citadel. It is the backdrop to the classic image of Machu Picchu. The mountain offers inspiring views of the ruins and 360° views of the area. The climb to the summit takes 45 minutes, it is a challenging trek and is very steep in parts. Going back down is quite steep if you are scared of heights. This is done without your tour guide, after your tour of Machu Picchu. There is limited to 400 a day, if you want to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain, it needs to be booked in advance (min. 3 months), due to popularity. And it has an extra cost of $75 per person. Note: The Huayna Picchu entrance ticket cannot be purchased separately.

Machu Picchu Mountain is the mountain located to the south-west of Machu Picchu citadel. The hike offers unparalleled sights of the ruins and panoramic views of the surrounding scenery. The trail is wide and well-marked. It is a moderate/challenging trek and takes 90 minutes to ascend. Limited to 800 a day, tickets must be purchased as a combo ticket at the same time as your entrance to Machu Picchu. This ticket cannot be purchased separately, it has to be purchased along with the Machu Picchu entrance ticket. It costs around $75 extra.

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are subject to availability as there are only a limited number of tickets per day. To add this extra to your reservation you need to send us an email to peruspiritadventure@gmail.com as soon as you’ve booked the tour. It has an extra cost of 75 $ per person.

It is unpredictable. From April through October, it is typically dry season in Cusco but this does not stop rain from falling in June or the sun from coming out in December – just be prepared. From November through March, it is the rainy season. No matter what month you are doing the tour or trek, please make sure that you have rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Also, prepare for four seasons. Many of the treks through the Andes involve many micro-climates and you will need to be prepared for all seasons. Layers are always key as they are easy to adjust to the different temperatures. And evenings will always be cold, so please be prepared with a warm, winter-weight jacket. In the Andes, which have altitudes over 3500 meters average daily temperatures are around 10°C (50°F) and overnight temperatures can dip will below freezing.

To avoid the altitude sickness take Soroche (Diamox) pills, eat light meals, drink coca tea, drink lots of water, and avoid alcohol (it’s a dehydrator). The best way to avoid altitude sickness is to acclimatize yourself. The recommended approach for acclimatization is to ascend gradually, spending at least 24 hours at every 2,000ft increase in altitude.

We recommend that you bring
  • Original passport (the same passport that you send us to buy the entrance fee to Machu Picchu)
  • Day packs: It is suggested to carry snacks, water, a hat, clothing layers, bug spray, etc. at all times, so you will likely have a small bag. We do not provide this and it should not exceed 25L
  • Comfortable sturdy walking shoes or runners
  • Long-sleeved shirts to prevent sunburn
  • Hiking pants
  • Hat and sunglasses to protect you from the sun
  • Rain poncho or a rain jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • Toiletries/toilet paper
  • Personal medication
  • Camera with extra batteries
  • Extra money for drinks, souvenirs, and tips
  • Bathing clothes for the hot springs (optional)

New Machu Picchu Regulations

In 1983 Machu Picchu was recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, the international organization that preserves and protects natural and cultural heritages around the world. UNESCO has been concerned with the increase of visitors to Machu Picchu in the last few years and worries that these crowds are damaging the ruins. They recommended new regulations to decrease the foot traffic in the ruins, which Peru’s Ministry of Tourism and External Commerce (Mincetur) has agreed to.

These new regulations will take effect on January 1, 2019. All visitors will now be limited to 4-hour stays. Tickets to Machu Picchu will now be separated into three daily shifts: early morning (6 AM – 9 AM), late morning (9 AM – 12 PM) and early afternoon (12 PM – 3 PM). Within these shifts, visitors must designate a specific hour to visit.

This is to regulate foot traffic into the ruins – each hour will be limited to 600 visitors so no more than 2400 visitors will be in the citadel at any time.

The new regulations will have a direct impact on hiking the two mountains next to Machu PicchuHuaynapicchu and Machu Picchu Mountain. In order to enjoy your tour of the ruins and hike Huaynapicchu without rushing, you will need an extra entrance ticket to the ruins extending your time allowed inside. This means that Huaynapicchu tickets will go from $ 35 per person to $ 75 per person.

All tours include entrance to Machu Picchu, but in order to hike Huaynapicchu safely, we will need to purchase a second Machu Picchu entrance ticket with the Huaynapicchu permit which will cost a total of $ 75 pp. These new rules will start on January 1, 2019, and will apply to all tours.

If you have booked Huaynapicchu with Peru Spirit Adventure and do not want to pay this higher fee, please write us to info@peruspiritadventure.com

Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. The deposit will be forfeited. Please note that this is a regulation of the Peruvian government and not PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE (or any agency).
    • All Adventure Treks include transportation to Cusco. The return train route depends on train availability.
    • If you become ill or injured on the trail and are unable to continue, a porter will be provided to accompany you back to an area with emergency assistance capabilities. Helicopter airlifts and medical assistance are at the expense of the trekker. If you are unable to complete the tour due to illness, we will assist you in meeting your group at Machu Picchu to recommence your tour at that point. There will be no refund of the original payment.
    • PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE will take all reasonable care in providing to our clients avoidance of accident, illness, and loss of personal property, and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. Peru Spirit Adventure cannot, however, be responsible for any action of third parties. You are totally responsible for your own personal property and rented equipment.
    • PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE does not take responsibility for unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal ítems, etc. It is the client’s responsibility to carry insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.
    • In extreme cases when the “Inca Trail to Machu Picchu” is declared closed for safety reasons, Peru Spirit Adventure will replace your trek with an alternative trek.

    VERY IMPORTANT:

    • We strongly suggest spending time at high altitude (above 3000 meters / 9842 feet)- in Cusco or another high altitude area for a minimum of 2- 4 days before undertaking your trip. This is in order to minimize the possible effects of altitude sickness. By drinking plenty of fluids, adding sugar to your drinks, eating food high in carbohydrates, avoiding cigarettes, alcohol, and drinking coca tea (ancient traditional leaf) will help your body acclimatize.
    • We recommend you arrive in Cusco 48 hours or more before trek departure because occasionally we need to leave earlier than scheduled in case of strikes or other events out of our control (see ‘Force Majeure’ section below)

    RIGHT TO USE PICTURES

You accept and grant to Peru Spirit Adventure – Tour Operator the right to use your images, photos, and videos that show or describe during your participation in any tour, trekking or adventure, in any advertising of any type, without payment of any additional consideration.
