The Sacred Valley of Peru is a relaxing and incomparably beautiful place hidden beneath of the formidable foothills of the Urubamba mountain range. Along the Sacred Valley of the Incas from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, there are many Inca and pre-Inca remains, all of them aligned on the route between Cusco and the citadel of Machu Picchu. Also, the Sacred Valley in Cusco is a peaceful area to spend some time wandering through markets or soaking up the local culture.
What was the Sacred Valley of the Incas in ancient times? The Sacred Valley of the Incas was a crucial area for the ancient Inca civilization and it functioned as both an agricultural, spiritual and political center for them and, adored for its fertile soil, perfect climate, natural resources, and strategic position. Where through the valley rolls the revered Rio Urubamba (known in Quechua Wilcamayu by the Incas), a pivotal religious element of the Incas’ cosmology.
The Incas believed not only that the flow of the Urubamba was inexorably tied to the constellations and the mountain peaks, but also that the river was the earthbound counterpart of the Milky Way. Furthermore, the Sacred Urubamba River is the main source of the longest river in the world known as Amazon.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is located in Peru’s Andean highlands, north of the Inca capital of Cusco. It’s also known as the Urubamba Valley. It begins just 20 kilometers or so from the city of Cusco and stretches roughly 60 kilometers to the town of Ollantaytambo.
The Sacred Valley was a significant area in the Inca Empire, rich with agricultural, spiritual, and political significance. The Urubamba River that flows through it was considered sacred, and the valley’s fertile lands were a major source of food for the empire.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to October. The weather is typically dry and clear during these months, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities.
The main attractions include the Inca ruins at Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero. Other attractions include the Maras salt mines, the Moray agricultural terraces, local markets, and beautiful Andean landscapes. Many visitors also use the Sacred Valley as a base for visiting Machu Picchu.
You need a car from Cusco via Pisaq, Chinchero, or Huaroncondo. You need to choose one of the routes depending on where you want to go.
The Sacred Valley is at a high altitude, with Cusco sitting at around 3,400 meters (11,200 feet) above sea level and other towns in the valley at slightly lower altitudes. Altitude sickness can be a concern, so taking it easy for the first few days to acclimatize, stay hydrated, and eat light meals is recommended.
While the official languages in Peru are Spanish and Quechua, English is commonly spoken in major tourist areas like the Sacred Valley. However, it’s always appreciated when visitors learn a few basic phrases in the local language.
Peruvian cuisine is diverse and highly regarded. In the Sacred Valley, you’ll find dishes featuring local ingredients like corn, potatoes, quinoa, and alpaca. Guinea pig (cuy) is also a traditional dish in the region. Fresh trout from the Urubamba River is another popular dish.
Yes, the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu starts near the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. The trek typically takes four days and three nights, and a guide must accompany you. Permits are required and are limited, so you should book well in advance.
Generally, the Sacred Valley is considered safe for tourists, but it’s important to take common-sense precautions like anywhere. Be aware of your surroundings, don’t flash expensive items, and be cautious with food and water to avoid illness.
The Sacred Valley is a must-see place in Cusco. You need to take a day or 3 days to explore these beautiful Inca Sites and local markets.
This is a great idea if you plan to visit The Sacred Valley of the Incas and then take the train to Machu Picchu. You must arrive in Ollantaytambo and go to the train station to board the trains to Aguas Calientes town (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo).
Before going to Machu Picchu, whether on a hiking tour or by train, we recommend 1 day in Cusco and 1 day exploring the Sacred Valley. This time will also help you adapt to the altitude as you rest for the big trip to Machu Picchu.
The Sacred Valley of the Incas has an average altitude of 2,800 meters or 9,186 feet above sea level. However, the elevation varies across the valley, ranging from 2,050 meters (6,730 ft) to 3,000 meters or 9842 feet.
The Sacred Valley of the Incas offers many tourist attractions such as:
The Sacred Valley is a territory that extended across the River Vilcanota-Urubamba that links the towns of Pisac, Urubamba, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo and more, northwest of Cusco city. The Urubamba river winds through this valley with fertile soils and an abundant water supply. The Sacred Valley altitude is lower than that of Cusco’s, making it a wonderful place to acclimate.
This splendid Andean valley is home to major archaeological sites and picturesque villages that have maintained their ancestral culture. Nowadays, due to its beautiful scenery and historical significance is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Peru and the gateway to Machu Picchu. Tourists constantly visit it, seeking tranquility, vacation days and even extreme adventures. In the Sacred Valley of the Incas you can find a variety of activities surrounded by magnificent landscape.
The most popular way to explore the Sacred Valley is on a full-day guided tour with a professional tour guide and driver. This allows you to sit back and relax while enjoying the fantastic scenery.

Goutam SVerified Trip to rainbow mountain this was a very difficult trip to rainbow Mountain. However, our guide Erfa made it possible for us. He was kind, supportive, encouraging, helping us with a local medicine to cope up with the altitude sickness. He always helped as maintaining a positive attitude and was friendly. he listened to our concern. He was watching our physical condition very very carefully! Even for the experience climber, this can be challenging at times considering the 18,000 feet above the sea level. Drivers of our car was also very experienced. We rode horses during part of our climbing. Overall, the individuals who help us with the horses , were excellent human being and very kind. Isabel LVerified Fabulous tour in the Sacred Valley Don’t hesitate to book with Peru Spirit, my mum and I had an amazing personalised day tour to the sacred valley, visiting Pisac and the Pisac markets, Ollantaytambo and Moray. We did the one day private tour from Ollantaytambo to Cusco stopping by Moray, Maras, Pisac, and an add on stop to a llama/alpaca farm. Anthony was our guide who was amazing! Very informative and knowledgeable about the area. The tour would not be the same without him. The van itself was spacious and comfortable for the four of us. We are very glad we decided to go with this company. MaMaRiDeVerified An amazing experience!!! We contacted Peru Spirit Adventure for a private tour to visit Cuzco and the surrounding area. We planned with them a four days tour to visit the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the Rainbow Mountains. We appreciated the expertise of the guide who took us to visit the places at the best times to avoid crowds of tourists. He pointed us to the scenic spots to take pictures or shop. Our only concern was to enjoy the beauty of those places without thinking about tickets, reservations, etc. This was especially appreciated at Machu Picchu where without a guide one cannot appreciate the history of the place. Special thanks to Anthony and the drivers who accompanied us on these magnificent days. We were absolutely satisfied and fulfilled by the highly professional service and highly recommend it. A 5 stars service !!! Mauro and Marco Raving NomadsVerified Highly recommend for trips around Cusco! Lisa SVerified Absolute Best Customized Tour We had an absolutely fabulous time with Anthony and Peru Spirit Adventures. We booked a 4 day personal tour with a day of rest in between day 2 and 3. Unfortunately at the last minute 1 member of our party was unable to attend. Anthony and Peru Spirit Travel were wonderful in making some necessary changes to our schedule. Anthony’s insight and knowledge of the Inkas and Andean Culture Is astounding. We learned so much from him that we found ourselves wanting to learn more once the tour was over. We are already discussing another trip back to see all the things we did not have time for this trip. His love for this area is apparent in his teaching, each place we visited we learned so much, yet Anthony also let us explore on our own. it was perfect balance for us.Anthony had everything running like clockwork( except for the delayed train). Everything ran seamlessly, even with all the last minute changes that we requested.Anthony was a fantastic tour guide and I would recommend him to EVERYONE who wants a truly memorable adventure in the Cusco Region. We will return for another tour, and we will be requesting Anthony.
