The full itinerary of the Inca Trail 2 days with Camping

Pre-trek briefing (required): We’ll meet you at your hotel in Cusco to provide a full pre-trek briefing the night before your Short Inca Trail with Camping 2 Days 1 Night to go over the itinerary and you can take this opportunity to ask final questions and make any final preparations. The meeting will be at 5:30 pm the evening before the trip begins. In case you can´t at this time “please let us know” to coordinate another time.

Day 1: Cusco – Km104 – Machu Picchu – Puente Ruinas Camp

Begin your exciting adventure of 2-day Inca Trail with camping to Machu Picchu, in the imperial city of Cusco (4:00am) or in the living Inca city of Ollantaytambo (5:30am) or from any point in the Sacred Valley like Urubamba. The exact pick-up time will be confirmed at your briefing, as they might fluctuate based on where you are staying.

Once Peru Spirit Adventure’s team will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco, we’ll drive in private car to the train station located in Ollantaytambo for 2 hours to board the first train at 06:10am to the beginning of the Inca Trail, also called Km 104.

During this magnificent train journey, enjoy its phenomenal views of the Urubamba River, towering snow-capped peaks such as Veronica (5,893 m/19333 ft), cornfield farms and glimpse the starting point of the classic 4-day Inca Trail. As we descend, feel the change of microclimate from the highlands and corn fields to the green jungle valleys with ferns, bromeliads and orchids as the temperature starts to get warmer.

After an hour and 25 minutes train ride, the train stops at Km. 104 – Chachabamba, where we will get off the train and walked down to the shores of the Urubamba River where we are greeted with a wooden bridge leading into the thick jungle and a few clouds hanging in the morning air. Upon arrival to the beginning of the trail, you must show the original passport to enter the Short Inca Trail. Be sure to bring your original passport, copies are not accepted.

Once you and your tour guide pass the Short Inca Trail checkpoint, we start the Inca Trail trekking! After walking for a couple of minutes, we will reach the first Incan archaeological site called Chachabamba (2,100m / 6,900ft), which was one of the last shelters that the Incas used before they reached Machu Picchu.

This beautiful Inca site of Chachabamba also used as a religious and administrative center, and features several buildings. Your Peru Spirit Adventure’s tour guide will give you some background history on these amazing ruins. After learning the history of the archaeological site of Chachabamba from your guide. Then we will start hiking the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu through a mixture of cacti vegetation and cloud forest.

On the way, we enjoy the fantastic views, waterfalls, the variety of flora and fauna, and different types of orchids in the semi-tropical forest towards another Incan significant site – Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m/8,700 ft), which means Forever Young in Quechua.

Once finish exploring the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna, enjoy your box lunch we’ve prepared for you and chill out. Following lunch, we will continue our hike in the afternoon into the cloud forest, filled with bromeliads, orchids and tree ferns for about 1 ½ hours along the most wonderful stretch of the Classic Inca Trail.

As we walk the last part of the trail relatively flat, with small ascents and descents we pass many impressive features such as the stone stairs and resting places to the Sun Gate (2,720 m/8,920 ft), which is called Inti Punku in Quechua.

From the Sun Gate, enjoy the first glimpse of this stunning archeological site of Machu Picchu surrounded by mountains and a dense forest. After getting some beautiful photos! Then we keep descending for another 45 minutes to arrive to a mirador near the -Guardian House, a breathtaking view of most of the citadel with temples and constructions built in white granite rock, plazas and terraces.

After arriving at Machu Picchu in the afternoon, you will have the chance to see this place with fewer people when everybody is leaving. After having enough time, we start descending to the entry of Machu Picchu. We board the bus to Puente Ruinas, where your chef and porters will be waiting for dinner and spend the night with our campsite.

When you arrive at the campsite, the tents will be ready; you can take a refreshing hot shower, enjoy tea time with your tour guide, have dinner, and sleep in comfortable tents.

Day 2: Puente Ruins Camp – Explore Machu Picchu (Lost City of the Incas) - Back to Cusco

Your Peru Spirit Adventure team will wake up in your tent with a cup of coffee. You’ll then pack your belongings and then enjoy your freshly made breakfast by our chef.

Then we’ll walk 30 minutes to the bus station in Aguas Calientes to be one of the first in line to go up to Machu Picchu (sometimes there is a 20-30 min wait in the line to board the bus). The first buses will depart at 5:30 am and arrive at 6:00 am.

Early in the morning, we’ll take the bus back to Machu Picchu to see the sunrise over the ruins and gets some amazing pictures and then you tour guide will spend 2.5 hours explaining the highlights of Machu Picchu and visit all the most important areas of the citadel through the circuit 3, which is the middle part of Machu Picchu.

After the tour, you will have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own. If you have booked a permit to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain you’ll start at 10:00 AM (Different from Machu Picchu citadel, and this ticket has to be arranged in advance for 75 USD each)

Once you finish visiting the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, you will be instructed on how to go back by bus down to Aguas Calientes, have lunch (not included). Then you have some free time to explore this small village before boarding our train back to either Ollantaytambo or Poroy.

In the afternoon you will take the train back to either Ollantaytambo or Poroy from where you will travel by private van back to Cusco and we will drop you off at your hotel. Arrival time in Cusco depends on the time of your train ticket.

Packing List for the 2-Days Short Inca Trail with Camping

During the 2-day Short Inca Trail with camping to Machu Picchu, you are responsible for carrying a small backpack with you; you must bring a comfortable daypack to put all the necessary equipment for the day.

We will provide you with a duffle bag where you can put up to 5 kilos of your stuff, and this bag goes directly to the campsite.

Essential for the Short Inca Trail: Below is a basic list for all Inca Trail hikers:

  • Backpack (if not waterproof bring waterproof backpack cover)
  • Original passport
  • Light & Comfortable backpack
  • Sturdy Hiking boots
  • 2 liters of water
  • Trekking poles (optional)
  • Rain poncho or a good rain jacket
  • Extra Money for tips and souvenirs
  • Layers for variable temperatures especially at night
  • Sun protection (sunscreen, sun hat & sunglasses)
  • Insect repellent
  • Toiletries / small towel
  • Water bottle – water purifying tablets (optional)

What to put in the daypack? Your backpack must be comfortable for hiking and light. You will carry this bag for around 7 hours and must put all the essentials for the day.

  • Original Passport: Original passports are required for this tour; you must show them when boarding the trains, entering the Inca Trail, boarding the buses to Machu Picchu, and entering Machu Picchu citadel. The passport number must match the number you provided at the time of booking; if you have renewed the passport after the booking, please let us know to update the numbers.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, sun hat: Sun protection is essential; you need a sun hat, glasses, and mosquito repellent.
  • Rain gear: Despite the season you are hiking, always take proper rain gear with you, rain ponchos, and waterproof jackets.
  • Extra snacks: We provide a snack during day 1. However, we recommend taking extra chocolates, power bars, granola, and candies for the long day of hiking during the Inca Trail and visiting Machu Picchu.
  • Extra money for souvenirs, drinks, and tips: Taking extra money is very important during this trip; you must buy water and souvenirs, pay for lunch on the second day, or give tips to your staff.
  • 2 liters of water in a reusable container: During the Short Inca Trail for 2 days, you must provide 2 liters of water during day 1 and 1 liter during day 2. Single-use plastic bottles are not allowed on the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

What to put in the duffle bag? The duffle bags will be provided during the briefing; you will put all the necessary stuff for the 2-day tour here. The duffle bags will go directly to the campsite, and you will not have access to them during the day.

  • Comfortable shoes or sandals for the campsite: Comfortable shoes for hiking, hiking boots are not extremely necessary but are preferred. Take some light shoes or sandals for the campsite.
  • Warm clothing for the early morning: The weather in Cusco and Ollantaytambo is cold early in the morning and late at night; the temperature in the Short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu is warmer: make sure you have clothes for all types of weather, including rain gear.
  • Light, comfortable hiking clothing: Hiking pants must be light and comfortable for the warm weather of the Inca Trail; long-sleeved t-shirts work better.
  • Swimsuit for hot springs in Aguas Calientes (optional): A bathing suit is optional for Aguas Calientes; there are hot springs in the upper of the town, but you need to go by yourself, and there is an extra fee to pay
