Full Itinerary for the Extended Sacred Valley Tour & Machu Picchu

Day 1: Cusco – Complete Sacred Valley of the Incas Tour – Machu Picchu Pueblo

To begin the extended Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu tour, we will collect you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:30 AM and then lead you in a private transport to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After driving 45 minutes over the mountain through picturesque village, we will stop at the Taray Lookout Point, which offers stunning views of the Sacred Valley.

After snapping some amazing photos and witness Urubamba River, we will head back to our private transport to continue the journey for another 45 minutes to the Pisac Archaeological Site. Here at Pisac Inca Site, we’ll explore the extensive ruins and enjoy the beautiful views across the valley.
At ruins of Pisac, we can appreciate immense Inca agricultural terraces, residences, altars, water channels, tombs, storage rooms and temples and we will learn historical context from our private professional guide.

Afterwards, we head back to our transport to continue our beautiful journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, along the Urubamba River. During this scenic drive towards the astonishing Maras Salt Mines, we’ll see a succession of picturesque villages and ancient Inca terraces, where people still live as they did hundreds of years ago.

Once we get at the fascinating salt mines of Maras (Salineras de Maras), we’ll see a unique collection of salt wells that have been formed into stepped terraces, fed by a nearby irrigation channel. Here your tour guide will educate you on the traditional ‘mining’ practices of the local people and the historical significance of the salt mines to the region.

Onwards, our private transport takes us to the village of Maras to enjoy lunch (not included) at local restaurant. Following lunch, we’ll drive through rich Andean farmland, surrounded by the breathtaking Andes mountains to the Moray ruins which are an archaeological complex in the Sacred Valley that has been captivating researchers and travelers for decades.

Moray is a series of circular agricultural terraces which look like a Roman amphitheater. The full purpose behind these concentric terraces isn’t fully known. However, it is widely believed that the ruins were once an agricultural laboratory used by the Incas. Also, the circular terraces that lie here are thought to have been used as an agricultural research station for different crop strains.

After exploring one of the most unusual and interesting archaeological sites of the Inca Empire, we descend in our comfortable private transport for about 1 hour towards the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo, enjoy spectacular views of towering snowcapped mountains.

At Ollantaytambo town, we’ll take through the bustling local markets to explore the famous Inca fortress that towers above the town, and one of Peru’s best well-preserved ruins. The fortress is surrounded by terraced hillsides, which were used to create agricultural terraces. The strategic position and architectural sophistication of the Ollantaytambo site, offers visitors some of the best views of the Sacred Valley from above.

Day 2: Explore Machu Picchu in all its Glory (and Return to Cusco)

To best appreciated the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu, Peru’s most famous tourist attraction, we’ll wake up early in the morning so we can get to the sacred Inca citadel in good time and enjoy a gorgeous sunrise over the ruins.

Enjoy your breakfast at your hotel in Aguas Calientes and then your guide will pick you up from your hotel and escort you the bus departure point where you and tour guide will board the tourist bus to Machu Picchu.

After a 25-minute bus ride along a steep zigzagging road to Machu Picchu, our tour guide will take to the Machu Picchu checkpoint, where you will show your original passport and your Machu Picchu ticket to enter to the Machu Picchu archaeological site.

Once into the Machu Pichu, our guide will take you to the best views to take the postcard picture of Machu Picchu and enjoy the new 7 wonder of the Word before the large groups traveling directly from Cusco or the backpackers arriving from Aguas Calientes on foot have arrived.

Then, our guide will start the 2.5-hours guided walking tour, and will take you to all the most famous and most spectacular parts of the extensive archaeological complex following the circuit 2. These include Main Gate, Temple of the Sun, Inca quarry, the Main Plaza, Sacred Rock, Temple of the Condor and among other attractions.

As you walk around the Machu Picchu Citadel, you’ll have spectacular views across the agriculture terraces of Machu Picchu and across to the surrounding mountains and plunging gorges.

Once the private guided tour in Machu Picchu is finished, we’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes where you can relax and have lunch (not included) at one of the many restaurants there.
